Foundation Grant

The Application Process

Submission Deadlines:

April 22 for the June 2025 Board of Directors Meeting
August 20 for the October 2025 Board of Directors Meeting

Thank you for your interest in submitting a grant proposal to The ACTEC Foundation. The ACTEC Foundation welcomes your proposal.

Topic Overview

The ACTEC Foundation considers grant proposals related to one or more areas of: (i) estate planning, including preparation and implementation of wills, trusts, and other documents, and related tax laws; (ii) administration of trusts and estates of decedents, minors, and incompetents through probate or other procedures; (iii) business and personal planning, including investments and employee benefits; (iv) litigation involving the foregoing; (v) improvements and reform of probate, trust, and related tax laws and procedures; and (vi) professional responsibility and standards related to the foregoing. Proposals should result in (i) benefit to lawyers in their practice in these areas or to law students and scholars who may be interested in this field or (ii) better service to the public in these areas.

Process

Grant proposals are initially reviewed by The ACTEC Foundation’s Grant Committee. The Grant Committee meets in advance of The ACTEC Foundation’s Board of Directors, which meets three times a year, generally in March, June, and October. After its initial review, the Grant Committee makes a recommendation to The Board of Directors.

Guidelines

Grant proposals are considered on a case-by-case basis. However, grant proposals will normally not be considered for: (i) projects that parallel or duplicate existing projects considered to be adequately funded; or (ii) project costs primarily related to management, rent, utilities, and similar indirect expenses or administrative overhead. Priority will be given to proposals that have one or more additional sources of funding, but the presence or absence of other funding will not be determinative of whether favorable consideration will be given.

Unless otherwise specifically agreed, each applicant receiving a grant from The Foundation gives The Foundation a non-exclusive royalty-free license to use all work product and other intellectual property that results from the applicant’s project.

Recommendations

Please review the list of grant proposals that have been successfully funded in the past for guidance on the amounts generally awarded and the types of grant proposals generally funded. General questions may be directed to Amy Michaud.

A complete grant proposal, including a budget, should be submitted to Amy Michaud in pdf form. Please ensure that each question on the application is fully answered.

Once a grant has been awarded, a letter of acceptance will be sent. Upon signed receipt of the letter, funds will be sent, generally electronically.

Follow Up

Successful grant recipients are expected to provide an annual report describing how program goals have been achieved. An annual report is required for every program year for which ACTEC Foundation grant funds will be used. The annual report may be sent via email to Amy Michaud.
